Impact Statement United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College) is a national charitable literacy organization. We believe literacy is a right. We work with volunteers and community partners to give people the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential.

Description Volunteer tutors assist newcomer children and youth through engaging literacy and numeracy games/activities and homework help. The tutors will support learners from grades 1-8 in developing their writing, reading, and math skills. The tutors will utilize a student-centered, strengths-based approach to support learners in small groups. This program is run in person at the YMCA Immigrant Services office at 800 King Street West, Kitchener. Our spring 2024 program session will run from May 8 until June 19 (7 weeks).
There is a particular need for volunteers who speak a second language (especially French, Spanish and Arabic).

Training / Work Condtions
Training Details: All United for Literacy volunteer tutors are required to attend:
1) a mandatory 2.5 hour new volunteer tutor training session - on either Mon. Apr. 29 from 6:00pm-8:30pm or Tues. Apr. 30 from 6:00pm-8:30pm at the University of Waterloo.
2) a 20-minute interview (over Zoom) sometime between Apr. 17-Apr. 26 (time flexible) and
3) complete a 45-minute online training module. Working Conditions: Accessibility: Support Newcomers Transportation: On a bus route

Time Commitment
Duration: 3 months or less Weekday - Evening Wednesdays 6:00pm-7:45pm from May 8 until June 19 (7 weeks)
