English Partner to Immigrants and Refugees

Conversational English Program - KW Multicultural Centre

Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre

   About the Position

Impact Statement
The KW Multicultural Centre exists to foster the diversity which exists in this community. Volunteers help to break down barriers to full participation of immigrants and refugees in the Kitchener-Waterloo community and surrounding areas.

Volunteers support immigrants and refugees in improving their skills in English, especially conversational skills for everyday living in Canada. Our volunteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and play a major role in helping their learners feel comfortable in their second language, and in Canada in general. The learner may ask the volunteer questions about the many aspects of living and working in Canada.

Volunteers are matched with an immigrant or refugee and meet once a week for 1-2 hours for a period of 4 to 6 months. Volunteers can meet with their English learners in person or virtually.

Volunteers should be fluent in written and spoken English, have strong listening and interpersonal skills, and respect people of diverse cultures.

Volunteers are required to obtain a vulnerable sector check from their local police service and share two references (one personal and one professional) as part of the application process.
