   About the Position

Impact Statement
The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region (SASC) is a community-based non-profit agency. Our Vision is a world without sexual violence and oppression.

Description
The Support Line Volunteer will provide information, referrals and emotional support to survivors of sexual violence and their supporters. Support Line and Online Chat positions are available for female identified, non-binary, Two-Spirit, gender fluid and diverse people only.

- Answer calls that come in within 2-5 minutes.
- Listen, validate and offer information and options to callers.
- Respond to callers who are in crisis and use de-escalation techniques to support them.
- Attend monthly meetings and educational opportunities to keep skills and knowledge current.
- Maintain service user confidentiality (exceptions to this include suspected child abuse or neglect, and/or if the service user is threatening to harm themselves or someone else).
- Establish and maintain personal boundaries with service users, volunteers and staff.
- Work in accordance with SASC’s Mission, Vision and Values.

Training / Work Condtions

Training Details: Comprehensive training is required and is provided free of charge. All volunteers must first complete an 8-session training program focused on Understanding Sexual Violence. These sessions are delivered virtually via Zoom for 2 hours twice per week.

After completing the Understanding Sexual Violence Training, support line volunteers will complete an additional 2-3 training sessions focused on developing practical skills for supporting survivors of sexual violence.
Working Conditions: Much of the work involves speaking on the phone and communicating with service users. All calls will be taken remotely from home, so a private place to answer calls is required.

This job requires intense concentration. Repeated exposure to details of violence and assault can lead to vicarious trauma. The need for debriefing, self-care and balance is critical for incumbents in this position.

Duration: 1 year or more
Anytime
4+ hours per week. The support line runs 24/7.
