   About the Position

Impact Statement
United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College) is a national charitable literacy organization. We believe literacy is a right. We work with volunteers and community partners to give people the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential.

Literacy is recognized as a human right and a driving force to empowerment and prosperity. United for Literacy leads the effort in Canada to help people and communities reach their full potential through the power of literacy.

Description
This newcomer educational support program is run by United for Literacy in partnership with the Somali Canadian Association of Waterloo Region (SCAWR). This evening homework club was developed to address the needs of newcomers and refugees from East Africa in Waterloo Region. The focus of the program is to provide literacy support for learners in grades 1-6 and academic support to students in grades 3 - 12. Tutors can choose which age group they prefer to work with.

This volunteer position is currently accepting applications for our fall 2024 session at Hillside Public School, 11 Chopin Drive, Kitchener. Our fall 2024 SCAWR homework club program runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30pm-8:30pm from October 1 until December 19. Volunteers can tutor both or one night/week.

Training / Work Condtions

Training Details: All United for Literacy volunteer tutors are required to attend a mandatory new volunteer tutor training session on either Tues. Sept 24 from 6:00pm-8:45pm or Sat. Sept. 28 from 10:00am-12:45pm at the University of Waterloo. All applicants will be asked to attend a 20-minute interview (over Zoom) sometime between September 16-September 27 (timing flexible) and complete a 45-minute online training module. All volunteers 18+ must have a current Police Vulnerable Sector Check in order to tutor with United for Literacy.
Working Conditions: Please fill out the volunteer inquiry form and then we will follow up with an application form (https://www.unitedforliteracy.ca/Volunteer/Program-Volunteers) and information regarding next steps in our new volunteer tutor onboarding process. You must be 16 years of age or older to apply to be a tutor with United for Literacy.

Time Commitment

Duration: 3 months or less
Weekday - Evening
Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6:30pm-8:30pm October 1 until December 19. Volunteers are only required to volunteer one night/week but are welcome to tutor both nights if your schedule allows.
