   About the Position

Impact Statement
United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College) is a national charitable literacy organization. We believe literacy is a right. We work with volunteers and community partners to give people the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential.

Literacy is recognized as a human right and a driving force to empowerment and prosperity. United for Literacy leads the effort in Canada to help people and communities reach their full potential through the power of literacy.

Description
Virtual North Six Reading Buddies is an online guided reading program run by United for Literacy, in partnership with the North Six Neighbourhood Association, that engages and helps children in grades 1-6 improve their social and reading skills in a safe, fun, and friendly virtual environment.

Virtual tutors are then matched up with learners to engage in 1:1 guided e-reading facilitated through Zoom breakout rooms. During the last part of the session, the virtual tutors play games with the learners to further develop their literacy and social skills.

This volunteer position is currently accepting applications for our fall 2023 session running on Tuesdays from 4:30pm-5:45pm from October 17 until November 28.

Training / Work Condtions

Training Details: A required 2.5-hour virtual tutor training will be held on either Sat. Oct. 7 from 10:00am-12:30pm or Wed. Oct. 11 from 6:00pm-8:30pm. You must attend one of these virtual tutor training session in order to become a virtual volunteer tutor. All United for Literacy volunteer tutors will have to participate in a 20-minute interview (conducted virtually) between Sept. 18 and Oct. 2 (time flexible) as well as submit an online volunteer application.

Time Commitment

Duration: 3 months or less
Weekday - Daytime
Tuesday- 4:30pm-5:45pm. This program runs weekly from October 17 until November 28.
