International Volunteer Managers Day 2024

International Volunteer Managers Day 2024

International Volunteer Managers Day recognizes the skills and knowledge that Volunteer Managers bring to their organizations.

What local Volunteer Managers had to say about "our future normal":

"I was recently at an event talking to people about volunteer opportunities at TLG. A woman passed by my booth then paused, and came back to talk to me. When I told her what we are about – helping adults with low literacy skills to improve those skills – she told me that is the sort of opportunity she was looking for as a recently retired professional. She has now successfully completed her training and will be matched with a learner. This is why I love what I do as a volunteer and outreach coordinator with TLG. It is about people helping people to make a difference."

Stuart Oakley Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator The Literacy Group

"Happy International Volunteer Managers Day! I have been reflecting on this year’s theme “What’s our future normal?” and after working in this field for 20+ years, have come to the conclusion that there is no “normal”. Volunteer Management professionals must be ready and willing to constantly adapt. The world is a different place than it was a few years ago and volunteerism has dramatically changed. Topics such as DEI have come to the forefront and have challenged the way we present information and operate. Volunteers are less likely to commit to long term positions, causing us to reevaluate roles and responsibilities. The use of Artificial Intelligence is growing but it cannot replace the importance of human connection, which is one of the main reasons why people volunteer. It is important to keep as current as possible through education and networking with others. I would recommend joining organizations at a local level (WRAVA), provincial level (PAVRO), national level (VMPC) and more. This will help connect you to seminars and workshops, many of which are free or low cost to members and most importantly connect you to others in the field who can provide invaluable support. Obtaining your CVA designation through VMPC demonstrates to employers that you meet a professional standard. These are all actions we can take to strengthen this profession, demonstrate its value and ensure that we can continue to thrive in whatever future normal is around the corner."

Christine Rushton CVA CVRM Program Manager Volunteer Services, Human Resources, Corporate Services City of Waterloo

"It has been an amazing four years immersed in the world of volunteer management. I began right at the beginning of COVID and work from home orders, and virtual volunteering was the only normal I knew for the first two years. Today, I continue to offer a hybrid volunteer opportunity (in-person or virtual), including the interview, orientation, and volunteer shifts. Volunteer roles need to be as flexible as possible. They need to fit into people's very busy schedules and offer a sense of true impact. As volunteer managers, we need to learn how to articulate the true value and meaning behind our volunteer programs. In our hearts and heads, we know the real impact that our volunteers are having. We simply need to get the right messages in front of our volunteers, managers, leadership, boards, and community partners.

Our future normal will definitely present some challenges. Volunteerism in Canada is on the decline, but I have faith that it will never disappear. People are looking for volunteer roles that work for them and I think the future starts with our collaborative efforts to professionalize and advance our chosen careers."

"Being a Volunteer Manager isn’t just a job, it’s a calling. A call to build connections, empower others, and create a space where everyone has a chance to succeed. As we celebrate International Volunteer Managers Day, we’re stepping into a ‘future normal’ where Volunteer Leaders like us are shaping national strategies, building diverse volunteer communities, and meeting new challenges and embracing AI. I’m so grateful for every opportunity to support and grow alongside so many inspiring people as we shape a resilient, purpose-driven future together."

Kyla Wright Vistor Experience & Volunteer Coordinator The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery

"In my three years of volunteer management, I’ve realized just how vital our volunteers are to our success.

Together with our volunteers, we can turn challenges into opportunities, building a future where everyone thrives. They play a crucial role in strengthening our community and helping others achieve their goals. Our volunteers bring the energy and creativity that brings our community together.

As we support our volunteers through training and recognition, we assist in empowering them to make a meaningful impact.

I am proud to be part of this change and to work alongside such dedicated individuals who are committed to making a difference.
Because together with our volunteers, we can turn challenges into opportunities, building a future where everyone thrives."

Manal Skaf Program Coordinator Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre

"Our future is about being flexible, resilient, and making a real impact. We’re changing as the volunteer world changes, understanding that our volunteers have different motivations and levels of commitment. As we adapt, we are reshaping our roles to offer volunteers more meaningful, sustained ways to drive positive change in our community.

Helping a vulnerable community isn’t just about quick fixes; it takes continuous, dedicated efforts. We encourage our volunteers to see their roles as an essential, ongoing step towards inspiring hope and transforming the lives of those we serve. Together, we can navigate these changes and build a lasting legacy of service and strength."
