United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College) is a national charitable literacy organization. We believe literacy is a right. We work with volunteers and community partners to give people the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential.

Description
Volunteer tutors assist newcomer children and youth through facilitating interactive virtual literacy and numeracy games/activities. The program involves tutors and learners meeting as a group at the start of each week's session and participate in icebreaker activities before tutors and learner are paired and put into breakout rooms for individualized support for approximately one hour. This summer online newcomer educational support program is run in partnership with YMCA of Three Rivers Immigrant Services.

This virtual volunteer tutor position is currently accepting applications for our summer 2023 program session which runs on either Tuesday afternoons from 4:30pm-6:00pm OR Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm-7:30pm. Program runs from the week of June 10 until the week of August 7.

Training / Work Condtions

Training Details: Mandatory 2.5-hour United for Literacy online tutor training to be held on Tuesday, June 27 from 6:00pm-8:30pm (over Zoom). You must attend a 20-minute volunteer interview in mid-June and attend June 27's new volunteer training sessions in order to become a volunteer tutor. All tutors must provide a current Police Vulnerable Sector Check in order to volunteer with United for Literacy.

Time Commitment

Duration: 3 months or less
Weekday - Evening
The summer 2023 virtual Family Language and Learning program runs from 4:30pm-6:00pm on Tuesday afternoons from July 11 until August 8 and Wednesday evening from 6:00pm-7:30pm from July 14 until August 10. Tutors can support program both nights or only one depending on availability.
