   About the Position

Impact Statement
United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College) is a national charitable literacy organization. We believe literacy is a right. We work with volunteers and community partners to give people the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential.

Literacy is recognized as a human right and a driving force to empowerment and prosperity. United for Literacy leads the effort in Canada to help people and communities reach their full potential through the power of literacy.

Description
Kids in grades 1-3 can get a little extra help with math in this numeracy support program run on Monday evenings in partnership with the Waterloo Public Library. The program, held at the John M. Harper WPL Branch, involves volunteer tutors facilitating fun math-based games and activities with elementary learners on a 1:1 basis.

As a volunteer, you don't need to be great at math to tutor. We are looking for passionate, dedicated people who want to help young learners learn through fun games and real world examples. People of all math abilities will be considered. No experience necessary! Must be 16 years or old to apply. Our spring 2024 program session will run on Monday evenings from 6:30pm-7:30pm from May 6 until June 24 (no program May 20 due to Victoria Day).

Training / Work Condtions

Training Details: All United for Literacy volunteer tutors are required to attend a mandatory 2.5 hour new volunteer tutor training session on either Mon. Apr. 29 from 6:00pm-8:30pm or Tues. Apr. 30 from 6:00pm-8:30pm at the University of Waterloo. All applicants will be asked to attend a 20-minute interview (over Zoom) sometime between April 17 and April 26 (timing flexible) and complete a 45-minute online training module. All volunteers 18+ must have a current Police Vulnerable Sector Check in order to tutor with United for Literacy.

Time Commitment

Duration: 3 months or less
Weekday - Evening
Number Ninjas runs from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. on Monday evenings.
The spring 2024 program session will run from May 6-June 24, 2024
(7 weeks, no program May 20).
