   About the Position

Impact Statement
This program provides students and opportunity to practice their reading in a fun and supportive learning environment.

As a volunteer, you will encourage reluctant readers to read aloud, offer reading strategies when needed, and play literacy-based games. Share your love of reading with children and provide them with a positive learning experience.

Description
- Start conversations; interact with children in a friendly and positive manner
- Help select books that are relevant and suitable to their needs
- Read together; play literacy-based games and activities
- Explain reading strategies and concepts when needed
- Provide positive encouragement
- Handle attention or learning challenges in a positive manner
- Act as a positive role model for children
- Ask staff questions when needed

Ideal for: An Individual
Age: 15+

Area(s) of Interest: Children/Youth, Library/Research

Skill(s): Interpersonal Communication, Communicate in Plain Language, Verbal Communication, Sensitivity, Adaptability


Training / Work Condtions

Training Details: - Reading Buddy Training session; mandatory attendance
- Reading Buddy Manual and Volunteer Handbook provided
Working Conditions: Library setting
Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible entrance, Wheelchair accessible washroom, Designated accessible parking space, Support volunteers with special needs, Accessible work space, Support Newcomers
Transportation: Not on a bus route


Time Commitment

Duration: 4 - 6 months
Weekday - Evening
Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm - 6:15pm
