   About the Position

Kitchener Public Library volunteers enhance library services in our community and make a difference every day!

Description
Social isolation is a very real problem many are facing right now in our community, and we need your help! Visiting Library Socials are conversational programs that connect older adults with community members who care. As a volunteer, you will work with others to facilitate virtual discussions using short stories, poetry, reflection exercises, and fun interactive activities on a monthly basis.

Volunteers must: enjoy interacting with older adults & have strong communication skills; be comfortable leading discussions; experience is an asset; able to collaborate with others; willing to be flexible; demonstrated ability to interact positively with others regardless of their age, background or ability; be dependable and punctual; have access to a computer with a camera and microphone, and reliable internet connection.

Training / Work Condtions

Training Details: • Review the Visiting Library Socials/Volunteer Handbook
• Attend a Visiting Library Socials Virtual Volunteer Training
At the training, library staff will discuss program goals and share best practices for facilitating group discussions with older adults. We will provide library resources and ideas on how to incorporate themes into your conversations.
Working Conditions: Visiting Library Socials are virtual using a Kitchener Public Library Zoom account.
Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible entrance, Wheelchair accessible washroom, Designated accessible parking space, Support volunteers with special needs, Accessible work space, Support Newcomers


Time Commitment

Duration: 4 - 6 months
Weekday - Daytime
Each Visiting Library Social is approximately 45 minutes in length; specific dates/times to be determined. Volunteers deliver two Socials a month (one program is shared with two different groups each month)
