   About the Position

Impact Statement
John Howard Society of Waterloo-Wellington (JHSWW) is a community based, professional non-profit charitable organization with the mandate to address the root causes of crime. JHSWW’s primary role is to provide direct services in the form of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention services. Services include: bullying prevention/social competency programs, employment programs, domestic/family violence intervention programs, and diversion & justice programs. JHSWW takes a holistic and broad approach to crime prevention that assumes myriad factors contribute to crime including social and community factors. Services are premised on the belief that diverse prevention services help promote wellbeing and successful citizenship, and build healthy and safe communities

JHSWW seeks an adult with a passion for maintaining healthy and safe communities through crime prevention to serve as Director.
You should be a resident of Waterloo Region or Guelph/Wellington County or have this catchment area as your primary place of employment.
You have leadership skills and are committed to partnering with the rest of the Board of Directors and the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer to provide excellence in oversight and strategic leadership.
Having an understanding of policy governance models, financial controls, and the non-profit funding context are requirements. A background in any of the following is an asset: IT, human resources/labour relations, finance/accounting, health & safety, or law.

Training / Work Condtions

Training Details: Agency orientation is provided.
Working Conditions: Meetings may be held in Cambridge, Guelph or Kitchener/Waterloo. Board meetings through to May 2023 are currently planned as virtual (Zoom) meetings.
Accessibility: Designated accessible parking space, Support volunteers with special needs, Support Newcomers
Transportation: On a bus route

Time Commitment

Duration: 1 year or more
Weekday - Evening
The position of Director typically requires 5 hours every two months and entails:
Reviewing Board meeting materials and attending Board meetings typically held @ 6 pm on the fourth Monday in September, November, January, March & May;
-Attending the Annual General Meeting/Appreciation Event & Board meeting in June; and
-Participating in Board Committee meetings as needed.
Meetings may be held in Cambridge, Guelph or Kitchener/Waterloo. Board members are unpaid volunteers serving one, two or three year terms.
