   About the Position

Impact Statement
Our Reading Buddy program provides students in Grades 1 to 4 an opportunity to practice their reading in a fun and supportive learning environment. As a Reading Buddy, you will encourage reluctant readers to read aloud, offer reading strategies when needed, and play literacy-based games. Reading Buddies want to share their love of reading with children and are able to provide children with fun, safe learning space.

Description
What you'll do:
. Start conversations; interact with children in a friendly and positive manner
. Help select books that are relevant and suitable to their needs
. Read together; play literacy-based games and activities
. Explain reading strategies and concepts when needed
. Provide positive encouragement
. Handle attention or learning challenges in a positive manner
. Act as a positive role model for children
. Ask staff questions when needed

What we're looking for:
• Fluent in English; excellent literacy skills
• Comfortable initiating conversations with children
• Able to explain reading strategies and ideas clearly
• Works well independently; manages time well and proactive
• flexible and open to new ideas and situations
• Patient and able to adapt to the needs of the children
• Contributes to creating a fun and safe learning space
• Reliable and able to make a commitment to weekly time slot (same day/time)

Age: 15+ English Proficiency, Confidentiality, Work Without Supervision

Area(s) of Interest: Children/Youth, Library/Research , Mentoring / Tutoring

Skill(s): Interpersonal Communication, Written Communication, Verbal Communication, Empathy, Flexibility


Training / Work Condtions

Training Details: Kitchener Public Library provides a Reading Buddy Handbook and a mandatory training session prior to the start of the program.
Working Conditions: Reading Buddies is held in a meeting room or in the children's area of the library.
Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible entrance, Wheelchair accessible washroom, Designated accessible parking space, Support volunteers with special needs, Accessible work space
Transportation: On a bus route


Time Commitment

Duration: 4 - 6 months
Weekday - Evening
Wednesdays from 6:30 - 7:30 PM.
