Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region

Client Description
All families meeting minimum requirements are eligible for our homeownership program. This includes single parent families with children who comprised almost one third of our last 45 homes. As well, one third of our new Cambridge build will be comprised of families who identify as black and our new Kitchener build has accessible units and are large enough to accommodate large or multi-generational families. Our Family Services Manager is a primary point of contact for those families, who are encouraged to reach out to us as a resource for any issues they may be dealing with. We also connect with all of the families annually in order to assess their current financial situation and ensure their mortgage continues to be manageable for them. This continuous support helps ensure that our partner families thrive in their new homes. Unlike many initiatives that focus on broad outreach, our home build program aims to make a significant impact on the long-term prosperity of a smaller number of families. The positive effects of homeownership extend well beyond the present moment, resonating through decades and even generations. By providing safe and affordable homes, we establish a sturdy foundation for families to flourish, enabling children to envision brighter futures. The benefits include better educational outcomes, improved mental and physical health, and increased community cohesion. We’re fortunate to make these long-lasting positive differences in the lives of local families and our community. We also take pride in how our work brings the community together. Family members benefit from the homes we build, and volunteers who join us on the build site and in our ReStores also gain from the experience. Community connections are vital to our social infrastructure's strength and resilience, and we are privileged to facilitate that through our work. We typically welcome over 800 hundred volunteers annually who give over 20,000 hours of time. We encourage and welcome partnerships with a variety of community volunteers, hosting annual Pride Day and Women Build events. In 2024 we welcomed over 184 youth to our volunteer program and we work closely with several community groups including Canadian Mental Health Association, Community Living, YWCA, oneROOF, Grand Valley Institution for Women and individuals working on community mandated hours. A vast majority of our ReStore volunteers are comprised of new immigrants, learning to speak English and to build skills that will help them gain a job.
